Former Bristol & District President passes away
It is regret that we have heard of the passing of a former Bristol and West Water Polo League President, Mr Glyn Townsend. His death was relayed to us via former referee and secretary of the league, Mr Pete Edwards.

Chris Ducker, former secretary of the Bristol and District League and a player with Glyn's old club, Bristol City, had the following to say:

While Glyn never (to my knowledge) played the sport, he was a tremendous supporter of water polo. He was the inspiration behind the development of a young Bristol City team that was based at Shirehampton pool and, after performing reasonably well in the B & District League, took the bold decision to enter the National League in 1973. The team played National League matches at Bristol South and finished third in Division Three in the first season before winning promotion the following year after finishing runners-up to Metropolitan Police. In 1975, City - still with an average age of no more than 20 - finished eighth out of ten teams in Division Two, briefly enjoying the experience of facing clubs such as Birkenhead and Otter (and finishing ahead of Weston-super-Mare and Met Police!). Unfortunately, that was the end of the story. Before the 1976 season had begun (the year, incidentally, that Bristol Central entered the National League for the first time), Bristol City suddenly folded. Sadly, as far as I am aware, every one of that excellent crop of young players then dropped out of the sport.

Annual Culdrose Water Polo Tournament
The annual Invitational Culdrose Water Polo Tournament takes place on the weekend of June 12 and 13, 2010, at HMS Seahawk Sports Centre at RNAS Culdrose, near Helson, in Cornwall, and the invites to this tournament have now been sent out to teams. If you have not received your invite you should contact the tournament organiser.

Also, they are looking to invite a fully qualified referee to the tournament, to save imposing on players, if you have someone you could recommend, please can you put them in touch with the Tournament Organiser, Sue Harwood, whose details are at the end of this report.

The entry fee is £125.00 per team payable to ‘RNAS Culdrose Central Fund’.  This should be forwarded with the entry form asap.  Your entry fee covers the cost of prizes, that are awarded to the overall winner in both the ladies and men’s competitions; refreshments, bbq buffet and disco for the Saturday evening where fancy dress is strongly encouraged.

ASA Waterpolo rules apply throughout the event and all team managers need to ensure their players are registered through their governing body.  Teams will consist of a maximum of 13 players.  The tournament organiser will act as overall referee and this decision will be final.

The sports field next to the upper pavilion will be made available to teams to camp for the weekend.  Teams can arrive no earlier than 1600 on Friday 11th June 2010 and must be clear by 1800 on Sun 13th June 2010.

All queries are to be directed to Sue Harwood whose contact details are:

Interesting spectator at Division 2 Bradford on Avon v UWIC game
There was an interesting spectator at the recent BWWPL Division 2 Bradford on Avon v UWIC game, in which Bradford managed to snatch victory in the last 11 seconds of the game to win 11-10.

LambOne of the Bradford on Avon players, stalwart Mike Coppin, had to bring along a lamb that had been born earlier that day and had been orphaned.
Sitting quite contendedly in a box with straw on poolside, whilst Mike turned in a typical Coppin performance, and looked after by the table officials and many interested spectataors, mainly the female supporters of UWIC and the poolside, accompanied by many oohs cooing, and suggestions from the UWIC supports that they might adopt the lamb and take him back to Wales.

After the game in the local headquarters of the Bradford on Avon team, basking in their hard fought victory, the lamb was bottle fed by Mr Coppin, who also enjoyed a well earnt pint.

Many dubious names were suggested for the lamb, all of which were rejected by its owner.
